Why suicide and self-harm can be very common in custody.

Drugs and misuse substances

Drugs and other substances available in prison and the effects. (e.g. hooch – prison alcohol, spice, steroids…)

24-hour confinement space

The reality of living in a tight confined space with another prisoner.

Psychiatrist’s section

Individual’s mental health can be so severely affected by being in prison, that additional support from medical experts (e.g. being sectioned), may be required.

Depression, fear and paranoia

Being confined in a tight box 23 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year may cause some damaging mental health effects.
